Smelly ice is usually not harmful when the odor is plain freezer smell the cubes absorbed, but ice that smells musty, rotten or chemical belongs in the sink, not a glass. On a Sub-Zero refrigerator, the usual fixes are dumping the whole bin, replacing a water filter older than 12 months, and cleaning the ice maker on its schedule.
Sub-Zero ice soaks up whatever air and water reach it, so the smell itself points to the source.
What does the smell of your ice tell you?
Food odor such as garlic or fish in Sub-Zero ice means the cubes sat for weeks near open containers. Absorbed food odor is a quality problem more than a safety one: dump the bin and cover the culprit food.
A musty or moldy smell in Sub-Zero ice points to film in the bin, the ice maker or an idle water line, or to an overdue filter. Do not use that ice.
A rotten-egg smell in Sub-Zero ice often starts in the household water. If kitchen tap water smells too, call a plumber or the water provider.
A chemical or plastic smell in Sub-Zero ice can follow a new supply line or filter, or signal contamination. Discard the ice, flush the system, and call a technician if the smell persists.
Why does a Sub-Zero ice maker make smelly ice?
Every Sub-Zero ice maker drops cubes into an open bin that shares freezer air, so ice left unused for weeks keeps absorbing odors. Low ice use is a common cause.
The Sub-Zero water filter is the other usual suspect. The Classic (CL) and Designer (DET, DEC) filter is rated for up to 750 gallons (2,839 L) or twelve months; replace it sooner if the indicator shows, water pressure drops or cubes turn hollow.
How do you get rid of smelly ice in a Sub-Zero?
Step 1: Empty the Sub-Zero ice bin completely and wash it in warm water with mild soap or baking soda; rinse and dry it. Remove spoiled or unwrapped freezer food.
Step 2: On a Classic (CL) model, change the Sub-Zero filter: lift the grille from its bottom edge, turn the old filter counterclockwise one-quarter turn, pull it out, uncap the new filter, insert it and turn clockwise, then follow the control panel prompts.
Step 3: Flush the new Sub-Zero filter. Non-dispenser Classic and Designer models discard the first two full bins of ice; dispenser models run water for 2 minutes.
Should an undercounter ice maker be cleaned on a schedule?
Yes. Sub-Zero recommends cleaning the Designer Series Undercounter Ice Maker at startup and then every three to six months by water hardness, with a default three-month reminder; each clean uses 1/2 cup descaler and 1/2 tablespoon sanitizer.
The Sub-Zero UC-15I is cleaned every six months: touch CLEAN, empty the bin, add 4 ounces (115 ml) of cleaner when the light flashes, then repeat with 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of sanitizer. Each UC-15I cycle takes about 30 minutes and cannot be canceled once started. The DEU1550I and UC-15I share a cleaner that is not interchangeable with 315I cleaners.
When is smelly ice a job for a technician?
Sub-Zero ice that still smells after a clean bin, a fresh filter and a full flush points to residue in the ice maker mold or fill tube, or an aging supply line. Ice maker and water line work falls within the published $275-$850 band; until a technician confirms the source, keep the bin empty and use tray ice.
